Game Cap Changes and Poll

Hello everyone!

With the app round around the corner, we wanted to make a quick announcement regarding the upcoming app round and also open up discussion regarding game cap changes.

First off, we will be dropping the game cap to 90 characters for this app round. Currently, the game stands at 75 characters, so this means as of this post we will have 15 app slots available for the current round. We will also be permitting players to app second characters for this round. We know that this is an abrupt change, and we apologize for the short notice! We had hoped to keep the 100 cap as initially proposed, however it’s become strongly evident to us that even 80 characters can be difficult to keep a healthy balance as a team and run an engaging and timely plot. As we really didn’t want to change our initial promises from before too much, we have to do what’s best for us and the game as a whole and have decided to meet this compromise for the upcoming round.

We would also like to remind people before the upcoming Activity Check, if you idle from the game, you cannot app in the next immediate round.

Now, onto our discussion regarding game cap.

We always planned to come back to the cap discussion after running the game through a plot heavy month where we could really see how the pacing affected our modding capabilities. During this month’s event, the game was around 80 characters after drops and idles through the past month or so. Bearing this in mind, we want to be upfront about how this cap affected the mod team and what that means for the future of the game!

First off, we want to thank everyone in this game for an extremely creative and engaging event this month! We are blown away by this amazing community and all the ideas, thought, and commitment you all bring to the table. It’s been a joy for us, and we’re all very excited for what you all bring to us in the future. :)

Bearing that in mind, personalization and timely responses have been something we’ve worked really hard to keep consistent through January. It is important to us that everyone feels heard and has their needs met and in a timely fashion so that we don’t hold them back! We have found, however, that doing this for 80 characters has been a strain on the team.

In the spirit of not wanting to sacrifice the level of engagement we have with our amazing playerbase, we have come to the conclusion that 80 characters is too high a cap for us to feasibly manage long-term. So we have two proposals we want to bring to the game for discussion:

1. The first, is an immediate drop in cap. This would follow the upcoming app round and would not come into effect until after the app round closed. This would mean we would shut down apps until the playerbase dropped below the new cap, which we currently propose to be 60.

2. The second option is a steady decline in game cap with each round. This means we would cap each app round to 5-10 apps, regardless off the game cap, until we found a playerbase size that felt right. The steady drop would not extend lower than 50 characters. However, if the playerbase size reached 65 and we felt comfortable there, we would potentially call that our new cap. After that, app rounds would be open to however many characters it takes to fill that new cap.

3. We don’t currently have a third option, but we are entirely open to all opinions on other options! :)

We would also like to bring up the possibility of rolling apps once again! This could be implemented either after option 1 with a waiting list for when we drop below the proposed cap. Or if option 2 were to happen, then once we reach the manageable size (75/70/65/etc.), then we would switch to rolling apps!

We know this is a lot of information, so please feel free to discuss and ask questions! We just want to thank everyone for bearing with us as we sort through what is best for this game. We love you all and everything you’ve brought to the game thus far, and only want to continue to do what we can to make this a great experience for everyone. Please continue to reach out to us publicly and privately with your concerns and feedback!

Thank you everyone! :)

Just throwing in my two cents here. The other game I'm in has a cap of 60 characters with a max of 2 characters per player and it's felt really comfortable at that number. It's a D&D-esque type game, so the mods are heavily involved with NPCing and RNGing dice rolls for us to see whether we succeed or fail at trying things that affect the plot. When you're running a game with such heavy mod involvement, it really, really feels better the less characters there are.

I know some people want castmates or to get their friends to app, and some might start squating because they've lost the voice but they're afraid if they drop they'll never get back in later, but in the end, mods need a game that allows them to breathe too. I voted for option one, because while I think option 2 is fine, having a strict number going forward seems better than leaving it up in the air, both for players and mods.

Thank you so much for this insight! I was personally waffling on the options, though I was mostly settled with One. This really helped me solidify that. I wasn't aware of another game run like that, but it sounds like it's really worked out. So I think it'd be great to try that out!

All of this, especially this part: having a strict number going forward seems better than leaving it up in the air, both for players and mods. I like the flexibility of being able to give people time to app in if they want but I also think the constant changing will be hard. I've never been in the game in question but if it worked out well, then maybe it'll work out here too?

The last big game I was in settled on a cap of 60 after experimenting with larger caps, and while I'm not saying that a 60-character cap is The Best Option For Every Game, I think it's probably easier to start low and, if the mods think they can handle more, raising it from there, rather than the reverse.

everyone else has pretty much covered my thoughts on this, so just chiming in to say that i agree with what's been said up above!

Literally I'm down for whatever the mods think would lighten their load the most cuz there is no game if the mods get burnt out and basically y'all are doing great <3
